BTW:
Dusty Lawdog says he can't make it to this shoot, but he would like for the officers to consider a Long Range Rifle match for Labor Day.
So, everyone start thinking about that possibility.
It would be another fund-raising match, and will hopefully involve some rifle trick shots.

Wahoo, I would love to shoot long range rifle at that blue buffalo (I think it is around 175 yards)! I am bringing out the 1859 Sharps carbine and 1874 Sharps 45-70 as well as the usual BP cartridge pistols and lever gun. Even if folks do not have a Sharps or Remington Rolling Block to shoot, a lever gun will reach that blue buffalo with the rear sight elevated a bit. That will be fun and a bit of a change of pace, too!
I would like to propose something, also: I got a Lyman ultrasonic cleaner on Monday that cleans not only brass cartridge cases, but also firearms and parts. I used it on Tuesday to clean my 1860 Colt on Tuesday by just removing the wooden grip and placing it in the ultrasonic cleaner. It cleaned it clean as a whistle without having to completely take it apart. If we have 110V readily available I will be happy to bring it with me so that folks can clean their pistols up.

The scenarios will be historic.
You will get the chance to change history by trying to rescue Warren Lyons from being kidnapped during a Comanche raid in 1837 in Lavaca County. (3 Rifle)
You can "be" Sally Skull in 1852 as she defends her honor by making a rude cowboy dance to the tune of her six guns in Downtown Corpus Christi. (10 pistol, 10 rifle, 4 shotgun)
And finally, you can be Deputy Sheriff James Walker in 1876 when he gets shot by a double crossing Mexican who was supposed to help him bring Walker's "bandito" prisoner back to Corpus Christi from San Diego. This took place about 1 1/2 miles North of Precenos. (Dr. Alexander Hamilton was called to remove the bullet, but Deputy Walker died, after lingering long enough to say goodbye to family and friends). (10 pistol, 10 rifle, 2+ shotgun)

Mainspring, would mind posting this on the Teaching Tips, Etc. board? I'd like it to be easily found by others. trpistoleros.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general3Thanks, -WM

Sounds like fun! Great ideas for stages!
I need to load up some of the smoky stuff for my cowboy rifle...

I'm not sure if I understand someone please clarify, is required to shoot something that shoots black powder or just shoot black powder?

We want you to shoot your blackpowder guns using blackpowder or blackpowder substitutes.
I don't think there will be a problem with borrowing someone elses gun.
And ... if you get to a stage, and all you have is one type of blackpowder gun (a pair of blackpowder pistols, a rifle, or a shotgun), you may shoot your smokeless guns. Just so long as at least one of the guns is BP.
I promise, no one wil get run out on a rail or tarred and feathered for shooting a smokeless weapon or two.

I have a partially used jug of Pyrodex that I want to give away.
I think I'll set up a contest for the powder.
$1 entry.
Fastest time to hit three targets with a pistol. The pistols are cap & ball. You start with the pistol(s) unloaded ... no powder, ball, lube, or cap in the pistol when the timer starts.
Any takers?
Maybe a second contest for an unopened can of Goex? Using a single shot rifle, if such happens to be present.

You BP people have fun. I would have been there in a heartbeat if it had been smokeless but that's coming soon. Today is your day to light up the sky (not the ground mindyou).

If ownership of a BP gun is the only thing keeping you away, come on up. I will loan you mine. Bring your smokeless rifle and shotgun (see above post), and you'll be all set. -WM

I enjoyed the black powder shoot! Wandering Man put together some good stages! The posse allowed me to shoot my cartridge guns with black powder (actually Triple Seven) and then shoot again with my cap and ball revolvers, with black powder. I thought it was a hoot, and even with a pretty good breeze, I'd have to stop and wait for the smoke to clear so I could see the targets! It really gives one some idea of what it must have been like in days past when acquiring one's sight picture may have been a much more serious proposition.
Mainspring gave us a little long range shooting lesson with his Sharps and 3 Reds showed us how to ring the buffalo, at about 150 yards, with her match rifle...impressive shooting by both! I hope we will have other opportunities to shoot our black powder guns! Thanks, Verdadero

I had a good time and I especially enjoyed watching all of you cowboys shoot the Sharps rifle with its hair trigger.

And a special thanks to Verdadero for keeping the match going, loading my cap & ball pistols and loaning his cartridges.
We had a lot of fun. Thanks Brushy and Janet for letting us use the range.
Attendees were: Mainspring Sodville Kid (guest) Inkblot Gal (guest) Verdadero Lobo 3Reds Brushy and Wandering Man.
Lots of smoke, no fire.
Verdadero polished off the match by shooting his home-made, but very real Cannon.
