Why don't we consider moving our match start time up to 9 AM? Just about every club I have ever shot with starts at that time. One club that I am aware of moves their start time to 8 AM in the summer months, due to the heat.
Although I missed the last shoot, I heard several reports about how hot is was and apparently some shooters didn't finish the match. Accuweather shows a typical summer day in South Texas starts out in the mid 70's, reaching about 76° by 7 AM. By 10 AM things usually warm up to around 88° and reach 95° by 1 PM. Once you hit 1 PM, there is no break in the temperature (heat) until late afternoon! We could expect the temperature to be in the mid 80's at 9 AM. We would start at a cooler temperature and we would not run as long into that 95°+ temperature we are going to face at noon or shortly thereafter!
Starting at 9 AM would probably allow us to finish the match before stopping for lunch. I like to eat as much as the next guy, probably more than most, but I think it is best to complete the main match before stopping to eat. Once folks take off their leather, eat, sit around and tell lies for a while, folks just aren't as enthusiastic about returning to finish shooting...especially when it is 95°! If we have special side matches or other activities planned, I think after we eat would be fine.
While I'm on my soap box, this proposal would work all the better if we make a determined effort to actually start on time! I know that there are going to be things that come up, but we really ought to be deliberate about getting the safety meeting started on time, break into our posses and start shooting!
